The Old Red Mill stood on Cedar Creek near Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia, a area that drew visitors to the limestone arch spanning the creek. Mills like this one were common along Virginia's streams, grinding grain for nearby farms and serving as gathering places for local communities. This glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1915 produced many scenic and rural views marketed to travelers as souvenirs. The picture shows how the Virginia countryside was presented to tourists in the early twentieth century.
