Where Patterson Creek empties into the Potomac, the river runs through a narrow mountain valley, and this large glass negative captures that stretch of water along with the rail line that followed it. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad commissioned the view, and its main line ran beside the Potomac here, so the image also showed travelers the scenery visible from the train window. The Detroit Photographic Company made the negative, probably around 1892 as the record suggests, on an 18-by-22-inch glass plate. The plate's size shows how much care went into these commercial landscape views.
