The Blue Mountain House stood at Pen Mar, a summer resort on the crest of South Mountain where Maryland meets Pennsylvania, and this view survives as two glass negatives joined into a single panorama. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued commercial photographs of American scenery in the 1890s and early 1900s, logged it under number 6117 and credited the "Jackson" studio. Late-nineteenth-century hotels like this one drew city visitors who came by rail for cooler air, long verandas, and wide views over the valley below, so the panoramic format suits the subject well.
