Looking out from Lookout Mountain, this view takes in the Tennessee River winding past Chattanooga, a city that had grown quickly after the railroads converged there and that was well known for its Civil War battles nearby. The picture is a Detroit Publishing Company view, made from a glass dry plate negative and copyrighted in 1902, part of a large commercial effort to document American towns, landscapes and scenic sites for postcards and travel books. Its date range runs to 1920, and the record gives no photographer's name, so the image is best read as a snapshot of the valley as tourists of the early twentieth century would have seen it.
