The rapids of the St. Marys River lie at Sault Ste. Marie, where the water falls roughly 21 feet between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, and the river's channel has long made it a busy passage for shipping. The Detroit Publishing Company made this image as a photochrom, a process that printed color from a set of hand-prepared stones, a method it used to sell views of American scenery and towns around 1900. The record notes that the print was kept in an album the company used as a catalog in its office, so it reflects how the firm organized and presented its work. The scene shows the river's rough water and waterfront, a reminder of why this stretch of river mattered to travelers and to commerce.
