Palm trees line the shore of the Halifax River at Daytona, Florida, in this glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American scenery and towns to travelers and publishers in the early twentieth century. Daytona sat on the east coast of Florida, where the river's calm, sheltered water drew winter visitors looking for a warm climate. The company's photographers, working with large-format cameras, recorded resorts, waterfronts and tourist sites across the country, and their images were later reproduced as postcards and lantern slides. The date is an estimate drawn from the company's own 1906 catalog.
