The view looks out from Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate on the Potomac, across the river toward the Maryland hills. Taken on a glass dry plate sometime between 1900 and 1915, it comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sent photographers across the country to document scenery and landmarks and then sold the images as souvenir views. Mount Vernon was already a popular pilgrimage site by then, thanks to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, which had preserved the house and grounds since 1858. The picture shows the river landscape that Washington himself knew well, and it reflects the period's appetite for scenic views tied to national memory.
