Few gardens in Virginia were worked as carefully as the kitchen garden at Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate on the Potomac. Washington planned its vegetables, herbs and fruit to feed a large household and its guests, and he kept close records of what he planted. When this glass negative was made, between 1900 and 1915, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association had already been caring for the property for several decades, and visitors came in growing numbers. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views of American landmarks to a national market, so the picture shows how the estate was presented to the public in that era.
