Washington's bedroom at Mount Vernon, the Virginia estate he called home, is the subject here, shown as it looked in the years before the 1920s. Washington died in this house in December 1799, and the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association began restoring the estate in 1858, which helped turn its rooms into a national shrine. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American landmarks to tourists and collectors, made the image on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format it used for large, detailed scenes. The picture is a useful record of how a historic interior was presented to visitors in the early twentieth century.
