Ford Mansion in Morristown, New Jersey, is the house where George Washington made his headquarters during the winter of 1779 to 1780, a stretch often called the Jockey Hollow encampment. The record notes cannons on the grounds, a detail that fits the mansion's role as a working military post rather than just a residence. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs of American landmarks and scenery in the late 1800s and early 1900s, produced this view around 1901, when many old Revolutionary sites were drawing tourists and preservation interest. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative offers a sharp record of the house as it appeared at the turn of the century.
