This glass negative records a painting of George Washington in camp, not a scene photographed on site, and it was copied photographically sometime between 1900 and 1920. Paintings of Washington among his officers and troops were popular through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Americans increasingly looked back on the Revolution as a source of national identity, and photographic copies let such images circulate widely. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced views and reproductions in this period, held the collection this plate belongs to, and the negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
