Rather than a camera portrait of Washington, this glass negative records a painting by Rembrandt Peale, and the Latin inscription on its jacket, *Patriae pater*, means "father of the country." That title, applied to Washington during and after his lifetime, shows how quickly he became a national symbol. Peale painted him from life in 1795, and his likeness helped shape how later generations pictured the first president. The Detroit Publishing Company made and sold photographs of paintings, scenery and cities around 1904, so this copy reflects that commercial archive. The cracked upper right corner of the glass is damage the cataloger recorded.
