Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, is the focus of this close view of the marine figures painted on the ceiling of the Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C. The fresco is the work of Constantino Brumidi, the Italian-born painter who decorated much of the building from the 1850s until his death in 1880. Detroit Publishing Company made this glass plate negative around 1904, when the firm was documenting American landmarks for a wide public.
