Two large glass negatives, each about 18 by 22 inches, were exposed in October 1890 to form a single wide view of Natchez on the Mississippi. Natchez sits on high bluffs above the river, which gave the photographer a long sweep of the waterfront, the roads, and the landing below. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American towns and landscapes, catalogued the pair as one panorama, and the left negative carries painted retouching. Mammoth-plate views like this one record a river town at a time when river traffic was still central to its commerce.
