Solid wooden wheels and a team of oxen set the old carreta apart in this view of the Pueblo of Laguna, New Mexico. The two-wheeled cart descends from Spanish designs and was a common way to haul goods across the Southwest, and it was still in use in Pueblo communities around 1890, when railroads were reaching the region and changing how freight moved. The negative was made by the W.H. Jackson firm, whose Southwestern views were later acquired by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this print. It is a useful record of everyday transportation at Laguna in that period.
