Numbered 50048 in the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog, this mammoth-plate view shows the Grand Canyon in Arizona as a broad sweep of colored strata. It was made by photochrom, a process that transferred a photographic image onto lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, and the company licensed the method from a Swiss firm to produce such prints in the United States. Views like this were popular with travelers and with readers who could not easily reach the canyon themselves. The print was also submitted for copyright deposit, which helps explain why a copy survives today.
