This panoramic view looks out from the Maine State Building toward the Poland Spring House, the large resort hotel in Poland, Maine, whose spring water was bottled and sold widely in the late 1800s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American landmarks and resorts around 1900, produced this long mammoth-plate print to capture the sweep of the grounds in a single frame. Its wide format and linen mounting were typical of the company's souvenir views, and the scene offers a glimpse of how the resort was laid out at the turn of the century.
