A yacht named *Fanny Reed* sits at the left edge of the frame, a reminder that pleasure boats and working fishing vessels shared the harbor at Portland, Maine. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document towns and scenery for publication as views and postcards, recorded this waterfront in the years between 1900 and 1915. The wooden docks and piled gear show a working harbor, the kind of scene that drew visitors to the New England coast during that period.
