Riverton Park, on the edge of Portland, Maine, is the setting for this rustic theater, a open-air stage built to look like a retreat in the woods. Trolley companies developed parks like Riverton around the turn of the twentieth century to give city residents a reason to ride the lines on weekends, with picnic groves, boating, dancing and summer entertainment. The rough, natural-looking style was a deliberate contrast to the brick playhouses downtown. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, resorts and landscapes across the country between about 1890 and 1910, recorded the building on a glass plate negative.
