Cherokee Park, laid out in Louisville by Frederick Law Olmsted's firm in the 1880s and 1890s, was one of the city's showpiece green spaces, and this glass-plate negative records one of its fountain-and-pavilion scenes from the years around 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, made large-format views like this one to document American cities, parks and landscapes, often for promotional sale as postcards and booklets. Its catalog number and the handwritten code on the negative help place the image within that commercial effort. Pictures of rustic park structures and water features like this one show how urban parks were meant to offer fresh air and orderly leisure to city residents.
