Nets hung to dry along the wharves of Portland, Maine, make this plate stand apart from the harbor views that fill much of the Detroit Publishing Company's output. The glass negative, eight by ten inches, was made sometime between 1900 and 1920, when the company's photographers traveled the country documenting towns, rail lines, and working waterfronts for commercial postcards and lantern slides. Drying nets were a daily sight in fishing ports of that era, since cotton and hemp seines had to be aired and mended after each haul. The picture gives a useful record of how a working harbor operated before mechanized trawling changed the trade.
