Turner's spring, on the slopes near Mount Agassiz in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, is the place this view records, centered on the penstock that controlled the flow of its water. Bethlehem was a summer resort in the White Mountains in the early 1900s, when visitors came for the cool air and the reputed healthfulness of local springs. A penstock, a gate or conduit regulating water, shows how such sources were tapped for hotels and households. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass plate negative, produced many scenes of resorts and scenic places for travelers and railroads.
