A tennis game on the lawn at left sets this view of the New Profile House apart from the broader hotel scenes in the collection. The hotel stood in Franconia Notch in New Hampshire's White Mountains, near the granite cliff known as the Old Man of the Mountain, and it catered to summer guests who came by rail to escape city heat. Resort hotels like this one were a major draw in the early twentieth century, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold views of such destinations to promote travel. The glass negative records the leisure life of the era, with the sporting activity and grand building showing how these mountain retreats were designed for genteel recreation.
