Cathedral Ledge rises above the Saco River valley near North Conway, New Hampshire, its sheer face and rounded summit giving the cliff its name from the way it looks like a church front in the White Mountains. This c1908 image was made as a glass dry plate negative, one of the large 8 by 10 inch plates that the Detroit Publishing Company used for its scenic views of the Northeast. The company, active from the 1890s into the 1920s, sold such views as photochrome prints and postcards to a national market hungry for images of American landscape and resort towns. North Conway was then a busy tourist destination, reached by rail and drawing visitors who came to climb and admire the granite cliffs.
