St. Michael's Cathedral and St. Luke's Sanitarium sit side by side in Springfield, Massachusetts, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative records both buildings in the same view around 1908. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and landmarks across the United States for sale as views and travel souvenirs, made the image in the years when it was building its large catalog. Sanitariums of this period often treated tuberculosis with rest, fresh air and sunlight, so the institution would have been a familiar local landmark, and the glass negative itself is a useful record of how these civic buildings looked before later changes.
