Smith & Wesson's Springfield, Massachusetts, works are the subject here, pictured around 1908 on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative. The company had been making firearms in Springfield since the 1850s, when Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson built their revolver business there, so the scene records a manufacturer already well established by the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document cities, industry and scenery, made the negative, and it reflects the period's interest in showing American factories as emblems of growth.
