Gray's Inn stood in Jackson, a village in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire that drew summer visitors by the early 1900s. Around 1908, the region's hotels and inns catered to travelers who came by rail and spent their days hiking, driving to scenic notches, and touring the mountain valleys. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative, produced views like this one for sale to tourists as souvenirs, so the picture reflects how resort businesses presented themselves to the people they hoped would stay with them.
