The steamer *Pendennis White* is the subject of this glass negative, a large 8 by 10 inch plate that the record places somewhere near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The St. Marys River and its locks were among the busiest passages on the Great Lakes in the early 1900s, when iron ore and grain moved in bulk from Lake Superior ports toward the lower lakes. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this plate, produced a large body of views of American places and vessels in these years. This example lacks a company number, and it reached the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift in 1949.
