A lake freighter called the William P. Palmer is the subject of this glass plate, which the record places, though only tentatively, at the Sault Sainte Marie canal in Michigan. The locks there lifted vessels between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, making the canal one of the busiest passages for ore, grain and coal boats in the early twentieth century. The negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, known for its travel views of the United States, and reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado. Without a company catalog number, its exact date and vantage point remain uncertain.
