A freighter named Falcon is the subject here, possibly photographed at the Sault Sainte Marie canal in Michigan, where ships climbed the rapids of the St. Marys River between Lake Superior and the lower lakes. The locks there were among the busiest on the Great Lakes, moving iron ore, grain and coal in the years before 1920. Detroit Publishing Company photographers documented such shipping during this period, and the large 8 x 10 inch glass negative holds fine detail in the hull and rigging.
