A lake freighter, the E.J. Earling, fills most of the frame as it sits inside a lock, its hull rising above the stone walls that hold the water. The picture was made from an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a large format that captured fine detail in the steel plates, the rails and the rippling water. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views of ships, towns and scenery to railroads and travel promoters in the years before 1920. Locks like this one controlled the passage of ore and grain boats between water levels, which made them busy and worth recording.
