A steamship labeled *Panama of New York* appears in one of the east chambers of the Pedro Miguel Locks, photographed looking north along the canal. The locks lifted and lowered vessels roughly 31 feet between the Culebra Cut and the Miraflores basin, and they were among the key works that opened the Panama Canal to traffic in 1914. This large glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented scenery and engineering across the United States and abroad around 1900 to 1920. Its date is recorded only as sometime between 1910 and 1920, placing it in the final years of construction or the first years of canal operation.
