A freighter named Oceanica is the subject of this view, recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative dated between 1900 and 1920. The catalogers were unsure of the exact location but suggested the Sault Sainte Marie canal in Michigan. The locks there were a busy passage for bulk cargo such as iron ore and grain moving between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, so vessels passing through were a common sight. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the view, built its large catalog of American scenes in these years by sending photographers to document waterways, railroads and towns. The Library of Congress received this negative as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
