Santiago de Cuba, on the island's southeastern coast, was founded in 1514, and its cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption, is among the oldest major churches built under Spanish colonial rule in the Americas. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its photographic views and later its color prints, sent photographers across many regions, and Cuba drew growing American attention in the years after the Spanish-American War. This glass negative, dated between 1900 and 1920, came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
