The sign on the arch reads "El Arco de Belén," and the lettering above a shop reads "Agencia de Mundazas Acosta," which places this view on Calle Acosta in Havana's older quarter, where a stone arch spanned the street near the Belén church. The picture dates to about 1906, a few years after the Spanish-American War and the start of the Cuban republic, when American photographers and publishers were eager to document the island. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 5 by 7 inch glass negative and catalogued it as no. 9439, sold such street scenes as postcards and prints. Its shopfronts and hanging signs offer a useful record of the city's commercial life at the time.
