Morro Castle, the Spanish fortress on a rocky headland at the mouth of Havana harbor, is the subject of this glass negative. Spain began building it in the late 1580s to guard the narrow channel against pirates and rival fleets, and its lighthouse later guided ships into the city. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view sometime between 1900 and 1915, and the 5 by 7 inch plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1949.
