Few things in this view are as specific as the name on its title: a house belonging to a boatswain, a petty officer who oversaw a ship's deck crew, which suggests the household had close ties to the sea. New Castle is a small town on Great Island at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor in New Hampshire, a place shaped by its shipping, fishing, and coastal defenses since the 1600s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass plate negative around 1900 to 1910, sold views of American towns and scenery to a growing tourist market, so the picture also captures how a quiet harbor community was presented to travelers of the time.
