Set in the Delaware Water Gap, where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge on the Pennsylvania-New Jersey line, the Kittatinny House was one of the resort hotels that drew summer visitors to the area. Railroad service in the mid-1800s turned the gap into a popular retreat for city dwellers escaping heat and noise. This view was made around 1909 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, resorts and scenery for sale to travelers and publishers. It was captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that recorded fine architectural and landscape detail.
