Here, a river cuts through the ridges at a water gap beside a railroad bridge, a combination that gave Clifton Forge its reason to exist. The town grew up in the 1880s around an iron furnace and the rail line that hauled its ore and pig iron through the Alleghenies. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenery between about 1900 and 1910 to promote rail travel and resort destinations. Its wide view shows how the engineers fit the tracks into the narrow gap.
