The staircase in this view is one of the best-preserved Norman features at Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, England, a stone stair built in the Romanesque style of the 11th and 12th centuries. Its rounded arches and heavy masonry contrast with the later Gothic work that surrounds it. The cathedral was a major pilgrimage destination after the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170, and its older architecture drew visitors long before photography made such views common. This negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that between about 1900 and 1920 sold views of famous European and American sites, many of them for travel publications and tourists.
