Captain Charles E. Clark, a United States Navy officer born in 1843, is the subject of this 1899 portrait, made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Clark is best remembered for commanding the battleship Oregon during the Spanish-American War, when the ship made a long, fast voyage from San Francisco around South America to join the fleet off Cuba in 1898. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its large-format views of American places and people, produced the image, and the negative reached the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift in 1949.
