The Naval YMCA in Norfolk, Virginia, was built to serve the sailors and Marines stationed at one of the largest naval hubs on the Atlantic coast. Norfolk grew rapidly as a port and fleet base in the early twentieth century, and the YMCA offered enlisted men a place to rest, write letters, read, and socialize away from the saloons near the waterfront. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its photochrom and black-and-white views of American towns, streets, and institutions, which documented the country between about 1890 and 1920. The record dates the picture only to the period between 1910 and 1920, so the exact year of exposure is unknown.
