Built in the late 1730s as the home of the Rev. John Sergeant, a missionary to the Mahican people of Stockbridge, the Old Mission House is among the oldest buildings in the Berkshire hills. Jonathan Edwards lived there in the 1750s while he preached to the mission community and wrote some of his major works. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1915, when the firm was recording towns and landmarks across the country.
