Willow Avenue on Star Island, in the St. Clair Flats where the St. Clair River spreads into a maze of channels and marshy islands before reaching Lake St. Clair, is shaded by the willows that give the street its name. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative in the years before 1915, when the firm was recording American towns, waterways and resorts for sale as postcards and travel views. The flats were a popular summer retreat for boaters and cottagers from Detroit, so the picture captures a quiet, leafy residential lane at the water's edge.
