Riverside cottages and their wooden piers line the waterways of the St. Clair Flats, a marshy delta where the St. Clair River opens toward Lake St. Clair, south of Detroit. The date of about 1905 places the scene in the years when the Flats drew anglers, duck hunters, and summer visitors who built small seasonal homes along the channels. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many such views of American towns and waterfronts around the turn of the 20th century, made the large glass negative, and its survival through a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado explains how it reached the Library of Congress.
