St. Clair, Michigan, sits on the St. Clair River across from Ontario, and in the early 1900s it drew summer visitors from Detroit and elsewhere by steamer and rail, so a hotel bearing the Oakland name would have served travelers escaping city heat. This large 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1906, a firm known for detailed views of American towns, resorts and landmarks. The record also traces the plate's path: a 1949 gift through the State Historical Society of Colorado, a reminder of how far such negatives could travel after their original use.
