Small cottages stand along the water at Saint Clair Flats, the low, marshy delta where the St. Clair River spreads out before reaching Lake St. Clair in southeastern Michigan. The flats drew duck hunters, anglers, and summer visitors, and modest dwellings like these often served as weekend retreats for families and sportsmen. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose 1906 catalog lists this view, sold its photographs widely as postcards and prints, offering a national audience glimpses of American waterways and resorts. The date here is only approximate, so the picture is best placed in the early 1900s.
