Set on a Cambridge, Massachusetts street, this 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows the State Armory, a civic building that stands apart from the town scenes that make up most of the Detroit Publishing Company's views. Armories of this era housed state militia companies and served as drill halls and gathering spaces for local units, usually as substantial masonry buildings on city streets. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced views of American cities and landscapes from the 1890s into the 1920s, made this negative sometime between 1900 and 1920. Its street-level framing shows how a military building fit into an ordinary urban block.
