Ruby Castles is a rock formation in the canyon country along the Colorado River in Utah, and this photochrom shows its layered red sandstone towers rising above the water. The Detroit Publishing Company produced these hand-tinted color prints around 1900, using a lithographic process that layered several stones to reproduce the warm reds and muted greens of the scenery. Companies like this one sold such views to travelers, who were just beginning to visit the scenic Western canyons by rail and river. The print is catalogued as a copyright deposit, which is why a copy survives in the collections of the Library of Congress.
