The farmhouse where the Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier was born in 1807 stands in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and this photochrom captures it as a rural homestead rather than a literary landmark. Whittier wrote many poems about the New England countryside he knew as a boy, and the house became a place of pilgrimage for admirers after his death in 1892. This print was made around 1900 by the Detroit Photographic Company, which used the Swiss photochrom process to produce vivid color views of American places. Its record notes that it was kept in an album the company used as a catalog in its office, so it shows how the firm presented its landscapes and sites to buyers.
